Portsmouth have confirmed that former Tottenham striker Steffen Iversen is training with the club.
The 29-year-old is currently with Valerenga in his homeland, but he is looking to move back to one of Europe's top leagues - with both The Premiership and Serie A looking viable options.
Iversen is interesting Messina in Italy, but Portsmouth look to have first option after he joined up with the South Coast club.
Pompey boss Harry Redknapp confirmed he was checking on Iversen.
"He is down here and has done very well," Redknapp told skysports.com.
"He has been with us for a couple of days now after somebody told us about him.
"I agreed to look at him and that is where it is now, he has come in and has got himself in great shape."
Redknapp has already bolstered his strike-force by signing both Benjani and Emanuel Olisadebe this month, but he admits Iversen is still an option.
"We will see how it goes but he could offer us a different option to the lads we have brought in", he concluded.

Portsmouth are attempting to persuade Chelsea into loaning them defensive starlet Glen Johnson.
Johnson was one of the first arrivals of the Roman Abramovich era when Claudio Ranieri brought him to Stamford Bridge from West Ham in July 2003 and he made a bright start to his career in West London.
However, he has fallen down the pecking order under Jose Mourinho and has little prospect of forcing his way into the first team picture in the near future.
The full back is deeply frustrated with his situation and a loan move could be considered by Blues chief Mourinho.
Pompey boss Harry Redknapp attempted to sign Johnson while at Southampton and is certainly a fan as he has instructed Pompey chairman Milan Mandaric to strike a deal with Blues.
"We are trying very hard for players and we've met Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho who will try to help us out over Johnson," said Mandaric.
"I know Harry would love to bring him here, but we face competition."
Newcastle boss Graeme Souness is a fan of Johnson and with The Magpies' defensive shortcomings well documented, they could rival Pompey for his signature should Chelsea give the green light to a loan move.
Redknapp has money burning a hole in his pocket following the arrival of Russian Alexandre Gaydamak and a goalkeeper is one of his priorities.
Middlesbrough's unsettled Australian Mark Schwarzer is a target, but Redknapp could turn his attentions to Norwich shot-stopper Robert Green.

Portsmouth have snapped up Tottenham trio Pedro Mendes, Sean Davis and Noe Pamarot.
All three are in line to play against Everton at the weekend after Harry Redknapp's remarkable raid on White Hart Lane.
Mendes and Davis are already training with their new club and Pamarot is on his way to the South Coast to link up with the Fratton Park club.
Redknapp refused to confirm the moves will cost around £7 million but it certainly represents a substantial investment for Portsmouth's new board.
Spurs seem to be clearing the decks ahead of an incoming move on their own, with Vincenzo Iaquinta one of the players believed to be on Martin Jol's hit-list.
Mendes, Davis and Pamarot have not been more than squad players at Spurs this season but Jol had stressed former Fulham midfielder Davis, in particular, was not for sale.
Mendes's Tottenham career will be best remembered for his goal that never was against Manchester United last year when Roy Carroll dropped his long-range effort over the line but referee Mark Clattenburg waved play on.
Redknapp, meanwhile, has denied making an approach to Norwich City for England squad member Robert Green.

Portsmouth chairman Milan Mandaric has stated the club could yet make two or three more signings, despite their Thursday raid on Tottenham.
Pompey bagged Sean Davis, Pedro Mendes and Noe Pamarot from Spurs, but Harry Redknapp is not looking for the club to close the chequebook just yet.
The South Coast outfit are believed to be interested in Norwich City keeper Robert Green after a last-ditch move for Antti Niemi failed.
"We're looking at other positions as well and I'm quite sure it's not the end of the signings for us," Mandaric told Sky Sports News.
"I couldn't say specifically which other players, but we are looking to sign two or three more players.
"I wouldn't want to get involved in any names now. They are players playing for other clubs. We are looking for quality players though."
Mandaric is delighted with the triple swoop and believes the new signings are in contention to make their debuts against Everton this weekend.
"I am definitely pleased," add Mandaric. "These are three quality players, players we desperately need to give us a good chance of staying up.
"These are the players Harry wanted. Of course I always rely on my manager's desire and decision and I think there's different with these players."
"Nobody can dispute their ability quality-wise. When they have played they have done well and I expect them to do well for us".
"I think Harry is definitely planning to give them a chance to play for us on Saturday".

Harry Redknapp was thrilled after Portsmouth captured Tottenham trio Sean Davis, Pedro Mendes and Noe Pamarot.
Manager Redknapp believes that the three new acquisitions have the quality to help Pompey climb the table, singling out Davis as one of the most talented young players in The Premiership and hailing the experience of Mendes and Pamarot.
"I'm delighted. I feel I've signed three outstanding players," he told Sky Sports News.
"Sean is one of the most outstanding young midfielders in this country, he just needs to get back on track and there's no reason why he can't push on from here and become a player pushing for international honours again.
"Pedro has been a UEFA Champions League winner and done the lot, while Pamarot is a strong defender.
"I'm delighted to have all three of them. I think they bring a bit of class and quality to the club."
All three are set to feature in the game against Everton at the weekend, but Redknapp is still intent on bringing in more reinforcements.
"All of them are available and are going to play on Saturday so I'm looking forward to that," he declared.
"The squad needed improving and I've brought in three class players. I'm delighted with the support I've had from the board because without them I couldn't have done it.
"We're still looking. I said when I came here that we weren't second bottom because we deserved to be second top. The squad was short and we had to put a team together that can hopefully get us out of trouble and take us forward."

Nigel Worthington says he has discussed Robert Green's future with his agent.
The Norwich goalkeeper has been strongly connected with Harry Redknapp's Portsmouth renaissance, but Worthington says he is yet to hear anything from the Premiership club.
"Robert's agent has spoken to me on the situation and his agent is simply trying to do his job for his player.
"Portsmouth has been mentioned but once again we've heard nothing from the football club. I have spoken to Robert - what was said is between Robert and I.
"At the moment there are no offers on the table that excite Norwich City as regards any player."

Spurs duo Sean Davis and Pedro Mendes have spoken about moving to Portsmouth.
Davis says that he can not wait to get back into action after finding himself frozen out at White Hart Lane.
"At Tottenham it wasn't going for me," he told Sky Sports News.
"Obviously I've had my injury problems but the last three or four months it's been a bit of a nightmare really. I've been training with the reserves and not really getting a look-in.
"I could have moved in pre-season but thought I'd try and fight for my place. But it never came round and I wasn't really given a chance, so when I was given the opportunity to come and play football and enjoy day-to-day work I snapped at it."
Mendes, meanwhile, says he has no regrets: "I don't regret any move I made in the past - even to Tottenham," he said.
"I had great times there but unfortunately in the last couple of months it hasn't quite happened for me.
"In the last couple of months I've been working in training only and the transfer window was the only motivation that I had.
"Portsmouth came in for me and it's a big challenge to try and get them pushing up the table".

The agent of Steffen Iversen has warned Portsmouth that they face competition to land his client.
The Norway international is currently training with the Premiership strugglers, with Pompey boss Harry Redknapp having previously intimated that he had been impressed with the former Tottenham hit-man.
With Alexandre Gaydamak's money burning a whole in his pocket, Redknapp is expected to bring more players to Fratton Park between now and the close of the transfer window, despite having already brought in three players from Tottenham.
Iversen remains an option but agent Christian Eidem has confirmed offers are already in the pipeline from several other clubs, with Messina, AEK Athens and Besiktas interested.
''Fortunately, things are starting to happen,'' Eidem told Dagbladet.
''The money offered by AEK is very good.''
